My workis inspired by traditional Pictish and Celtic images, and pivotal moments in Celtic history. As I child I loved to visit castles, cathedrals and museums, which inspired me to use a medium that was used then, and a technique that was available to the artisans of that period. In this way I capture the historical significance of the work and participate in methods in keeping with the work’s subject matter.
I carve my original sculpture in gypsum then casts in cement fondue using an 18th century process. This all-natural medium creates fine, delicate detail. Each piece is distinctively marbled, created by mineral colouring, and is enhanced by using the stone polishing technique of hand waxing and bristle buffing.
